The Sarawak Aluminium Company (SALCO) has begun a public Detailed Environmental Impact Assessment (DEIA) for the construction and operation of its proposed aluminium smelter development at Similajau.
A DEIA is an investigation into the potential impacts of a project on the environment and the local community. The objective of the DEIA is to ensure that all impacts, especially environmental, social and economic impacts associated with the proposed development are fully examined and evaluated. Construction cannot begin until the DEIA is approved by the Malaysian Government.
The DEIA process will take approximately 18 months in total, and involves various stages, including field surveys, monitoring, data collection and assessment of potential impacts. Public consultation is an important part of the DEIA. SALCO invites everyone who has an interest in this Project to provide comments or feedback at http://www.salco.com.my/contact.html, so we can ensure the Project has an understanding of all concerns and impacts.
The outcomes of the DEIA studies will be used to optimise the design of the smelter and in the preparation of environmental management plans for construction and operation.
A full copy of the DEIA will be available at www.salco.com.my when it is complete.
One of the first steps of the DEIA is the development and approval of the Terms of Reference (ToR). The ToR is a document describing all the studies and assessments that must be included in the DEIA and ensures the study will produce the necessary environmental information and meet government guidelines. SALCO and its environmental consultants have developed a ToR and submitted it to Malaysia’s Department of Environment for review. The Department of Environment has accepted and approved the ToR and the DEIA has begun.
