According to CMS Group Managing Director, Dato’ Richard Curtis, “We take these responsibilities for the care and preservation of the environment very seriously. Environmental protection will be an integral part of the management of the smelter, during both construction and when in operations”.
“We will ensure the SALCO smelter meets international health, safety and environmental standards,” added Dato’ Richard.
The SALCO smelter will adopt leading environmental standards and practices based on Rio Tinto Alcan’s world class practices used in its mining, refining and smelting operations. The company has a strong history in environmental management, particularly in Australia where it manages the country’s largest smelter, Boyne Smelters Limited, in Gladstone, Queensland. The smelter co-exists with a thriving local community located 400 metres away and is adjacent to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.
