Thursday, 30 April 2008, Bintulu – As part of the SALCO aluminium smelter project feasibility study, the SALCO team have held a consultation session with the residents of Nyalau villages living to the north of Similajau, the site of the proposed smelter.
The SALCO team comprising officials from CMS and Rio Tinto Alcan, joined the independent environmental consultants, Chemsain Konsultant, to spend a day with residents from Kampung Nyalau, Kampung Nyalau Hulu, Kampung Kuala Nyalau and a neighbouring longhouse.
Over 100 residents packed into the local community hall to attend a presentation on the proposed aluminium smelter. This was followed by a lively Question & Answer session and an exhibition showing details of the project. The information shared included the smelting process and elements to be assessed under the Detailed Environmental Impact Assessment (DEIA) for the 550,000 tonne annual capacity SALCO smelter. |

The public DEIA is being conducted under Federal environmental legislation. Public consultation is an important part of the DEIA and it is important that the environmental consultants and SALCO engage with the Nyalau community which lies about 10 km to the north of the proposed smelter site.
From the responses of the Nyalau residents, they appreciated hearing about the project directly from the SALCO team and DEIA consultants and appreciated having an opportunity to express their opinions on the potential positive and negative aspects of the proposed project.
The general public across Sarawak is being communicated about the project through the SALCO exhibition which is part of the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) exhibition road-show. The exhibitions have been held in Bintulu, Miri, Mukah, Sibu and is currently in Kuching.
