“We are aiming for zero injuries, zero occupational diseases and zero community incidents. Zero goal is a holistic approach in the way we do business. We believe in contributing to long term global sustainability by acting responsibly at a local level. To this end, working with local communities remains a key focus for us.”
Meanwhile, Cahya Mata Sarawak and Rio Tinto Alcan are also currently in discussions with several Sarawak educational institutions, to develop partnerships to provide training and employment opportunities for Malaysian Nationals at the SALCO smelter.
Mr Liddy said SALCO is confident the training programme will be a great boost to Malaysia’s human capital development.
“SALCO is focused on contributing to the local and business community of Sarawak, and Malaysia, and our zero goal concept will help us achieve that.” |

SARAWAK ALUMINIUM COMPANY
Rio Tinto Alcan (RTA) and Cahya Mata Sarawak (CMS) are undertaking studies to develop an aluminium smelter in Sarawak, which will be known as Sarawak Aluminium Company (SALCO). RTA owns bauxite mines, alumina refineries and aluminium smelters, and has extensive experience in the design, engineering, construction, commissioning and operation of world class aluminium smelters. An aluminium smelter converts alumina into aluminium metal. The alumina for the Sarawak smelter would be sourced from RTA.
